Improvement works

From time to time, often at weekends or public holidays, Gatwick Express has to make alterations to train services, usually for planned Improvement works.

Disruption between Clapham Junction and East Croydon / Mitcham Junction

Trains are now able to run normally between Clapham Junction and East Croydon / Mitcham Junction following a fault with the signalling system in the Streatham area earlier today.

Delays between Horsham / Brighton and East Croydon

Trains between Horsham / Brighton and East Croydon are now able to run normally following a fault with the signalling system between Gatwick Airport and Redhill.

Disruption between Haywards Heath and Brighton expected until the end of service

All lines have now reopened as emergency services have tended to the person who was unfortunately hit by a train.

How is this currently affecting the train service?
The majority of services have returned to normal, however isolated services may still be running late by up to 20 minutes. Trains will remain disrupted until the end of the day.

Your tickets will be accepted on the following alternative services:

  • Metrobus between Gatwick, Three Bridges, Crawley and Brighton.
  • Brighton and Hove Buses between Preston Park, Brighton, Hove and Shoreham-by-Sea. And between Brighton, Seaford and Eastbourne.
  • Mutual ticket acceptance is in place between Southern and Thameslink and Gatwick Express.
  • London Underground via any reasonable route

Can you tell me more about the incident?
We are sorry to report that earlier today a person was hit by a train between Haywards Heath and Brighton. All trains in this area came to a stand, and the power to the lines switched off whilst Network Rail Response Staff and other specialist teams attended to this tragic incident.

Lines have been reopened to allow train services to run, and train services are returning to normal however some delays and alterations are still occurring.

Southern, Gatwick Express and Thameslink work closely with The Samaritans and support the work that they do. If you or someone close to you has been affected by this incident or other, there is always someone to talk to. Contact the Samaritans on 116 123 free at any time, on any phone. Help & advice is only a phone call away

During major disruption, train crew and carriages will often not be in the correct places to start their next journeys on time. There can often be a crew shortages. This is because staff have a maximum number of hours they are able to work. Although at times it seems as though trains are available to run, there may not be enough staff available to drive or work on the train, and therefore services will be cancelled.

Work will continue to run as many services as possible; however, these may be altered at the last minute to accommodate the crews' working regulations.
